21UP Movement Residential: A Life-Changing Programme for Youth
The 21UP Movement Residential at Stubbers Adventure Centre brought together 40 young people from Essex and London for a fully immersive adventure, supported by UK Youth. This growth from just 24 participants in the previous residential demonstrates the incredible impact of this experience.
Participants aged 10 to 18, from primary school, secondary school, college, university, and home education, come from diverse cultural, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds. Some have medical conditions, special educational needs, or other support needs, and the residential is designed to fully include everyone, ensuring a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment.

A key highlight was the creative media programme, where participants took ownership of filming, interviewing, and documenting their experiences. They learned practical skills such as camera work, framing shots, and directing conversations, all while developing confidence, leadership, critical thinking, and collaboration.

In addition to media activities, young people engaged in adventure and team-building challenges including high ropes, raft building, caving, the Leap of Faith, and our Head-to-Head challenges. Evening events, workshops, and celebrations complemented these experiences, creating a well-rounded programme that builds practical skills, social connections, and personal growth.
The 21UP Movement Residential empowers youth from all backgrounds to step out of their comfort zones, take responsibility for projects, and excel in problem-solving and teamwork. It is a transformative experience that fosters independence, resilience, and skills that extend far beyond the residential itself.
By supporting programmes like the 21UP Movement Residential, government agencies, local authorities, and businesses directly contribute to:
Youth Development: Confidence building, leadership skills, resilience, creativity, and personal growth
Community Cohesion: Inclusion, respect, and understanding across diverse backgrounds
Parental Peace of Mind: Safe, structured environments with trusted mentors
Corporate Social Impact: Demonstrating commitment to social responsibility and youth empowerment
Outstanding Outcomes: Enjoyment, Confidence, and Social Growth
The impact of the residential is measurable:

86.8% of participants rated their enjoyment as high
84.2% felt very safe throughout the residential
84.2% reported making new social connections
89.5% recognised the benefit of the residential for their peers
Participants described life-changing experiences:
All Activities Enjoyed: High ropes, raft building, caving, and the Leap of Faith challenged them mentally and physically
Evening Events: The Rave, music, football, and celebrations created memorable bonding opportunities
Independence and Social Skills: Being away from home and devices helped participants connect authentically with peers
Stepping Out of Comfort Zones: Participants discovered new strengths, boosting confidence and resilience
Creative Skills: By taking ownership of filming, interviewing, and documenting the residential, participants developed media, communication, and leadership skills
Parents also saw the benefits first-hand:
“In todays world its scary knowing your kids are out with their friends but to know they are out with good people in the outdoors making new friends with trusted adults in a safe environment. You just don’t get that often, so you have to appreciate it.”
“My daughter came home so excited telling me all about it saying she made loads of new friends, and she already can’t wait for another one.”
This feedback shows how impactful and necessary these programmes are for youth development and community wellbeing.
Why This Matters: Youth Risk, Crime, and the Need for Positive Intervention
Youth crime remains a pressing concern in England and Wales. In 2025, around 3,700 knife and offensive weapon offences were committed by children, mostly aged 10 to 17, which is 23 percent higher than ten years ago. Violent offences accounted for 23 percent of all proven offences by children. Without early intervention, some young people are at risk of continuing offending into adulthood. (gov.uk)
The 21UP Movement Residential offers a safe, structured, and inclusive environment where young people can develop confidence, resilience, leadership, and teamwork skills. By engaging in adventure, creative, and social programmes, participants gain practical skills and positive social connections that steer them away from risk and toward achievement. Investing in youth development now can reduce harm later and help create safer communities for everyone.
Why Funding is Critical
Programmes like the 21UP Movement Residential require resources to:
Cover participation costs for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and the trained staff supporting them.
Provide safe, inclusive environments with youth leaders who are fully trained, DBS-enhanced, and able to support all participants, including those with medical or special educational needs.
Offer diverse, engaging activities that promote confidence, teamwork, personal growth, and media/creative skills.
Ensure essential needs such as food, accommodation, and accessibility are met for all participants.
Without funding, many young people would miss out on life-changing experiences that develop social skills, resilience, creativity, and future opportunities.
By supporting the 21UP Movement Residential, funders, businesses, government agencies, and individual donors can:
Build confident, independent, and resilient young people ready to thrive in school, work, and life.
Strengthen community cohesion and inclusivity by empowering diverse youth from all backgrounds.
Demonstrate social responsibility and measurable impact that reflects corporate, civic, and personal commitment.
Directly support youth and families in positive development and personal growth.
Align with education, social inclusion, and community cohesion agendas.
Receive measurable reports showing youth progress, engagement, and outcomes.
